Magdalen Powers' words are like fists, and she knows how to use them. With just a few punches, she is able to convey an enormous depth and emotional impact. Hand Over Fist contains 13 short stories about love found, love lost, and love ripped from your hands by fate. Ms. Powers writes elegant, literary prose, but does not shy away from the raw sexuality and heat of a torrid romance. In Nobody Knows Nothing, she writes 'You go to the tiki bar with Elaine and drink Singapore Slings and gaze at your red toenails and say "God, it's great to be single." But you don't mean it. Your ideal revenge would be to tie him up and suck him off until he passed out. He'd still leave, but at least he'd have felt: something.' Pow. Her punches hit home.
In addition to the book, limited copies of Hand Over Fist will come with a mini-cd containing 7 audio versions of the stories from the book. Ms. Powers recorded them in her New York apartment, over the sound of the city streets, so the audio is rough and tumble -- fitting for the material it contains.
The books also include a laminated bookmark, illustrated by Anna Lord, who also illustrated the cover and interior.
Both the CD and the bookmark come attached to the inside back cover of the book in a cardboard pocket -- like the one inside a library book.
